Ingredients required

  • 3-4 ripe tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons oil (preferably coconut oil)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram lentils)
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal (split Bengal gram lentils)
  • 2-3 dried red chillies broken into pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon hing (asafoetida)
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Jaggery or sugar to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Let’s prepare Tomato Gojju

  • Wash and chop the tomatoes into small pieces.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Add cumin seeds, urad dal, chana dal, and dried red chillies when they start to splutter. Saute until the dals turn golden brown.
  • Add hing, turmeric powder and chopped tomatoes. Mix well and cook covered on low heat for 5-7 minutes or until the tomatoes turn mushy.
  • Add salt to taste and jaggery/sugar. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with steamed rice or chapati.
